This Monday, the Runasur Technical Commission confirmed the suspension of the Second Meeting of the Peoples of Abya Yala, which was to take place in the city of Cusco, Peru, on December 20th and 21st at the invitation of former President Evo Morales.
“Due to the new variant of Covid-19, which has been classified as ‘classified as high risk’ by the World Health Organization (WHO), the Runasur technical commission decides to suspend the II meeting of the Abya-Yala peoples,” it says in the explanation.
He argues that the decision to suspend the event is based on ensuring the health and safety of all invited guests, and especially the host country. This is even more true when there are countries in the region that have put new restrictions in place due to the pandemic.
The Runasur Technical Commission announced that the meeting will be postponed as soon as hygiene regulations guarantee this.
The call for this event was questioned in Peru mainly because of its political nature and caused unease in political circles and was interpreted as interference in domestic politics.
Rogelio Rivas, one of the organizers of this meeting, told the La República newspaper that this decision was made by the declaration of “persona no grata” by former President Morales by the Foreign Relations Commission of the Congress of that country.
“The leader also mentioned that another reason for the decision is the questions its organizers from Peru and Bolivia have received through the media. He noted that some authorities accused them of interventionists and of trying to get into the former’s ideology Bolivian President to invade the country, “reads the report of this media company.
