More than 5,400 Haitian citizens entered Bolivia irregularly

From January to last week, 5,418 Haitian citizens entered the country irregularly, the Directorate-General for Migration reported. In addition, 19 people were arrested for the crime of human trafficking.

“As a result of the checks that the Directorate-General for Migration carries out daily and continuously, an estimated 5,418 people have crossed the national territory irregularly, these people were intervened in violation of sanitary measures and also those of the current immigration regulations,” said the Director General for Migration, Katherine Calderón.

Calderón stated that Bolivia is a transit country between Chile and Brazil and that Haitian citizens are trying to reach the United States.

The Director also announced that she will set up an inter-agency table to work with the Ministries of Defense, Government, Health and the Chancellery to develop control strategies.
