Fire in El Palmar reserve affects 1,000 hectares and mobilizes two helicopters

A forest fire affected at least 1,000 hectares in the El Palmar Integrated Management Natural Area (ANMI) in the municipality of Presto, Chuquisaca.

The fire broke out four days ago and spread quickly on different fronts, Efraín Pérez, director of the Sucre fire department, told Fides.

The fire affected many of the fauna and flora of this national park, which is home to unique species in the country.

Presto Mayor Jaime Roque told Correo del Sur that 885 hectares were affected yesterday.

The Vice Minister for Civil Protection, Juan Carlos Calvimontes, told the capital newspaper that two Super Puma helicopters will arrive at Alcantarí airport this Thursday and then fly into the protected area to support the fight against fire.
