The Cochabamba citizens’ strike to reject the draft law against the legitimation of illegal profits was carried out with “sporadic” lockout points, most of them in the central and northern areas, marches, confrontation deception, gassings and detainees.
The President of the Citizens’ Committee, Marcelo Piérola, and the representative of the Committee for the Defense of Democracy (Conade), Lizeth Beramendi, said that at least 80 percent of the population adhered to the measure. From the MAS, however, they called the citizens’ strike a “failure”.
The first blocking point was on Sunday night at Av. Circunvalación and Atahuallpa, and this Monday more than 10 points with vigils were reported mainly in the central and northern areas of the city.
“The strike is not as strong as expected, but the shops have closed and the population has withdrawn to their homes,” Beramendi told the media.
Reduced public transport has been observed and some supply centers and shops have been closed. The mayor’s office of Cercado has discontinued care in municipal offices “at the request of the workers’ unions and decentralized companies”.
Meanwhile, the government, hospitals, and banks participated normally. “The blockade is already forcing the citizen and restricting the right to free passage; A blockade was not called, a strike was called ”, asked Governor Humberto Sánchez.
Senator Leonardo Loza said the mobilization was “a failure. People are more concerned with how we can restore our economy ”.
Police intervened at points to clear the streets, such as that of the Circunvalación, which were also gassed to evacuate people, and three were arrested. The day ended with a massive concentration in the Plaza de las Banderas.
Citizens rate the measure in the final spurt as “successful”
The sectors in Cochabamba that followed yesterday’s citizen strike met at night in the Plaza de las Banderas to analyze the details of the pressure measure against the anti-legitimation law.
Omar Sánchez, representative of the Citizens Platforms, told Red Uno that they had met with other sectors to “analyze” the outcome of the citizens’ strike in Cochabamba.
The leader confirmed that the strike was “successful” and that other meetings are expected to analyze other measures for the future.
At the call of the Unity for the Defense of Democracy bloc, Cochabamba followed the strike yesterday to reject the law against the legitimation of illegal profits.
After the meeting in Plaza de las Banderas, the march went to Plaza 14 de Septiembre with the aim of getting the members of the trade union sector out of this place, taking into account that there will be a call for tomorrow in which those familiar with The The Movement to Socialism (MAS) will lead a mobilization called “wiphalazo” and the arrival of hundreds of coca farmers from the tropics of Cochabamba is expected.
Union workers are on hunger strike in the city’s main square because they believe their sector is one of the companies hardest hit by the Legitimacy of Illegal Profits Act.
“We will ask the striking comrades to withdraw from the strike or to go to a safe place. We believe that they will try to attack them, ”said the leader Sánchez.
Several sectors that led the citizen strike and blockades during yesterday’s session were concentrated in Plaza de la Banderas at night, such as the health sector, the Committee for the Defense of Democracy (Conade), the Citizens Committee, the Citizens Platforms and People Who Took free to take part in the final march. The protesters sang choruses alluding to the defense of freedom and democracy.
