Marcelo Valdez, lawyer for former MP Lidia Patty, reported this Monday that former President Jeanine Áñez will request at a hearing on Tuesday that the preventive detention she is serving in Miraflores prison in the case of “Coup I” will be requested. in which she was charged with the alleged crimes of sedition, conspiracy and terrorism.

“Tomorrow, at the Seventh Criminal Court, at 2.30 p.m., the hearing on the lifting of preventive detention is pending and Ms. Áñez has attached a lot of evidence, she is seeking her freedom and in the petition we asked for inspection.” Apply for house arrest; The hearing is related to the Coup I case for sedition, conspiracy and terrorism, “said the lawyer.

Áñez has been in preventive detention for more than eight months for the crimes of sedition, conspiracy and terrorism, which various international organizations such as Human Rights Watch regard as “vague”, “abstract” and “very broad” under Bolivian law, the Group Independent Interdisciplinary Expert (GIEI) and the UN Committee against Torture (CAT).

On November 25, the Committee against Torture expressed concern over allegations of sedition and terrorism against former President Jeanine Áñez. He said that these crimes “do not conform to the principle of legality” in Bolivian law.

Deputy Minister of Justice and Human Rights, César Siles, said at the 72nd session of the CAT in Geneva that the criminal process for incitement to hatred, conspiracy and terrorism against former President Jeanine Áñez was paralyzed.

Former military chief attorneys charged with the same crimes in the Coup I case have indicated that the case is still in force and that the trial cannot be stopped just because an agency says so. They challenged Siles’ lack of knowledge of the law and statutes.
